RSL Woodend

On Wednesday 22nd April we walked to the RSL in Woodend to look at the static displays and learn more about the Anzacs and WW1.

Bailey's great great grandfather Fred Fisher  fought in the war and was killed in action.

Western Water Incursion

On Friday the 20th March Ann from Western Water came to Carlsruhe
and gave us a presentation on the value of drinking water for health.
We need to drink 5 to 6 glasses of water every day to our bodies fit and healthy.
Water is vital for all of our body in order for it to function properly.

Sammy the snake is the mascot for Western Water.

Isabella ordered 6 drinks from the healthiest to the unhealthiest.
Tap water far outweighed all the other drinks.
Sebastian ordered the drinks for MU7 and we learnt that 400 glasses of tap water costs about 1 cent.

Keira showed us that there are nine and a half teaspoons of sugar in 375 ml of cake
by making our 'pretend'version of coke by simulating the recipe.

The recipe used by Amy and Keira included soda water for bubbles, red and green food colouring for the colour, vinegar for the acid, vanilla for the flavouring, and of course the sugar!

Mathilda and Olivia were our nurses who held onto Torso Sue,
while Ann talked about the digestive system and showed us all the parts.

River Detectives

Our River Detectives program commenced on Friday 13th March where we talked about how important the river is to the environment, animals, bird life , water creatures and of course us.  This was followed by a walk down to the Campaspe River to check its health. Here we collected a water sample and tested the water for pH, Reactive phosphorus, electrical conductivity, turbidity and temperature.
The results were recorded and we will continue to test the river water each month to monitor its health. These will be sent to the central data base of the North Central Catchment Management Authority where they will be compared to the other school’s results from further upstream.

Sophie and Charlie tested the pH,
while Justina and Ashton measured both the air and water temperatures.

Jamie and Amy were in charge of working out the turbidity,
while Bella and Harry calculated the electrical conductivity.

Clara and Claudia recorded all our results
when we were testing the water by the Campaspe River.

Sam, Olivia, Jess, Jordan and Mathilda were the team who tested for reactive phorphorus.
They used chemicals in the water and had to wait for 5 minutes for the reaction to be complete.

Edgars Mission

On the last day of Term 1 the Carlsruhe students went to visit Edgar’s Mission. At their new property in Lancefield we were treated to seeing chickens, pigs, rabbits, deer, sheep, cows, goats and more. Hip Hop Bob, a beautiful black pig, entertained us with her skills in playing fetch with a stick and sitting on command, whilst Little Miss Sunshine, a rose coloured hen, could identify herself as a chicken from a selection of pictured disks and count using a dice. All the students loved being able to pat the animals as well as having many photos taken. At the end of the day we had a tour and were able to hand feed the sheep and cows which proved to be a great highlight.
